Deep Tissue Massage
Precise, focused work for chronic tension and stubborn knots.
Deep tissue massage is my go-to for relieving patterns of muscular tension that have built up over time - the kind of stubborn knots and tightness that a lighter massage doesn't quite reach. Using firm, sustained pressure, I work systematically through the layers of muscle causing you problems, easing restrictions and helping restore normal movement.
This isn't about brute force. Deep tissue work is most effective when your nervous system stays calm and relaxed - if you tense up against the pressure, the muscle guards itself and the treatment can't do its job properly. I'll always work within a pressure level that challenges you without tipping into pain, checking in as we go.

What to Expect
Before, during, and after
Before
- Come as you are - no need to prepare beyond arriving comfortably
- Let me know about any areas that are particularly sensitive or painful before we start
During
- Expect firm, sustained pressure with regular check-ins on how it feels
- Communication throughout helps me adjust pressure and technique to what your body needs
After
- Drink some water and give your body a chance to settle
- It's normal to feel a little tender for a day afterwards, similar to how muscles feel after a good workout
"Deep tissue is about finding out what's actually going on in the tissue, not just pushing hard and hoping for the best. I'd rather work slowly and precisely at a pressure that lets your body stay relaxed than rush through with force that makes you tense up and guard. That's when real, lasting change happens."- Luke, Redfern Remedial Massage
FAQ
Deep tissue massage questions
It shouldn't. There's an old idea that deep tissue massage has to be painful to work, but that's not true - if you're in pain, your body tenses up and guards itself, which works against the treatment. I aim to work right up to the edge of discomfort, never through it.
Sports massage uses similar techniques but often involves more active participation from you - moving a joint, resisting against pressure, that sort of thing. Focus massage takes a deep tissue approach but concentrates it entirely on one or two areas rather than the full body.
Many insurers do cover soft tissue therapy - it's worth checking your policy, and I'm happy to provide a receipt with my qualifications for any claim.
Pressure is always relative to the individual, so yes - I adjust depth and intensity to what's right for your body, whether you're very active with tight muscles or generally more sedentary with tension from posture.
